Evgeniy Bukatin Dr. Lee Templeton ENG 112-03 February 16, 2011 Journal 6 I believe that the purpose of this article written by Noel Ignatiev is to inform people about the way that America has gone through racial resentments in order to become a truly democratic nation. Also, by focusing on the research on race and cultural diversity, Ignatiev makes a tremendous contribution to the fight against racism all over the world. In this article, racial persecution is the main claim that Ignatiev wants readers to pay attention to. The author asserts that race changes with historical and cultural beliefs, and it is not fixed in people’s biology. The story of the Irish in the United States gives people an understanding of the concept of race as itself, and it also provides readers with both of the Americans’ and the Irish immigrants’ perspectives of the common problem. The Irish were not counted as white within the cultural hierarchy and were seen as the second-class citizens.
