HIST Contd. 18:33 The 1920s The Red Scare o 1919-1920 o short lived period of political intolerance o o 1917-1918 series of violence in Russia to overthrow Czars USSR in 1922 In the midst of this violent history, in 1919 in US over 4 million workers  participated in strikes across country demanding better wages, 8 hour  days, safer working conditions, right to unionize  Things workers had seen put into place during WWI  Workers only asking for reinstatement of rights they had just a year  before Patriotic organizations began to make propaganda against the  strikers Strikers are unpatriotic, they are disloyal, they are un-American,  they are communists  system just as they were in Russia Propaganda campaign worked, much of America, especially middle  class, turned against the workers  By attacking capitalism, workers were making a communist  movement  Spring of 1919, extremists mailed bombs to variety of political leaders  Simultaneous bombings in 8 cities  Alien act

Deport any immigrant that was a part of a revolutionary  organization Raids 249 people are deported as a result of the palmer raids (nov 1919-  jan 1920) Hoover begins to compile thousands of files of people  who are holding  in radical political ideas  Encourage other repressive measures against radicals  A Decade of Prosperity Country very prosperous as a whole during this decade  of the decade Mass production spreads in American industry  o Assembly line Nation doubles electricity capacity  Factories: electric motors help do more work  If you lived in city, you got electricity in your home  What drives this boom is, fordism Fordism Automobile industry drove the post war boom Caused ripple effects in other areas as well Now needed to pave roads, create stop signs, etc. now needed to drill oil for  gas, needed dealerships, etc Toll roads & highways made it possible for people to live farther away
