18:42 10/18/10 The Cold War The Truman Doctrine o Asked congress to in this fateful hour for $4 million dollars to fight  communism o Europe were sliding towards chaos Disease spreading Communist party gaining support in Italy, France, and Germany  The Marshall Plan o Committed US to rebuilding Europe Gave countries money to rebuild (13billion in 4 years) infrastructure,  agriculture, industry, etc Only to countries where they were actively fighting communism  NSC-68 o Soviets increased eastern Europe control by having countries sign  contracts making them soviet satellites  o Soviets blockaded Berlin June 1948 They controlled 1 section of the city, now blockading remaining 3  sections belonging to US, Great Britain, and France, from their part Blockade ultimately fails The attempt to create the blockade, terrified the western powers  o In 1949, communist powers take over in China In April of 1958, state department created report National Security  Council of 68

US should use as much force as needed to defend from  communism  Calls on congress to raise taxes in order to fund huge military fund Reinstatement of military draft Defense spending tripled 1950-1954 Korea o Korean War 1950-1953 o 1910-1945 Korea was an oppressed colony of Japan o o Meet at 38 th  parallel South, independent south Korea North, communist lead north Korea Saw 38 th  parallel as temporary block Eventually they would be united  o Late June of 1950, north Korea attacked south Korea  South Korean army collapses, Truman sent American ground troops in  their defense  o Truman didn’t go to congress for a war declaration, got support from UN “it was a police action not a war” o o South built a strong defense on 38 th  parallel
