Chapter 2 1. Explain the origins of management. Even though in old Egypt they probably had an idea of management already to be able to construct the huge pyramids, management started being important worldwide after the Industrial Revolution. Now unskilled workers were taught one part of how to make a product in a machine; therefore they had a lot of employees that needed order and organization. To accomplish this they needed to start with the ideas of management. 2. Explain the history of scientific management. At the beginning when management started to be a trend, not much thought was put into their job. They gave orders to workers to work twice as hard, they did not give workers breaks and if the workers resisted to anything the managers would hit them. However, after having a lot of trouble dealing with workers to increase productivity Frederick Taylor started analyzing the situation and he came up with the scientific management. One of the things he found was the “one best way” of doing each job, and then he would teach this method to the workers. Taylor also said that managers had to cooperate with the workers to make sure that the job is done the correct way. Finally, he came up with one more principle was that the amount of work and responsibility given to the workers had to be the same amount of work and responsibility given to the manager. Taylor was not the only one that contributed to the efficiency and improvement of jobs, but the Gilberths also helped with their Motion Study, in which they analyzed each motion required to get the job done and they took out steps that weren’t necessary and they would improve others so
