Chapter 5 1. Discuss the benefits and pitfalls of planning. Planning has a lot of benefits, it intensifies the effort of what the manager is working for; it also increases the persistence of working for those goals in the plan because you want to get them done to scratch off the “to do list”; what is more planning provides direction to work towards the goal you want to accomplish because you just follow it and you do not get side tracked; finally planning creates task strategies because once all the steps that one has to do to accomplish the goal you can think of the big picture and maybe make changes and better strategies to accomplish it. On the other hand, planning also has some pitfalls like impeding change as having a schedule or a plan can really structure what you do and it can be hard to change it; what is more a plan can also create a false sense of certainty as planners think that they are certain that certain things will happen however these are all assumptions; finally, planning allows planners to plan for things they don’t understand when a top manager is making plan with details missing, etc. 2.
