Chapter 15 Learning Outcomes 1- Explain the role that perception plays in communication and communication problems. Perception is the process by which individuals attend to, organize, interpret, and retain information from the environment. Perception plays a big role in communication and it goes through a series of processes. Attention filter is the process of noticing or becoming aware of particular stimuli; organization is the process of incorporating new information into your existing knowledge; interpretation is the process of attaching meaning to new knowledge; retention is the process of remembering intercepted information. Perception can create communication problems for organizations because people exposed to the same communication and information can end up with completely different ideas and understandings. A lot of times people do selective perception which is a tendency to notice and accept stimuli and information consistent with our values, beliefs, and expectations while ignoring or screening out or not accepting inconsistent stimuli and information.
