Chapter 7, 9, 11 Heuristic = cognitive shortcut that speeds up decision making o Saves time, cognitive energy, and often leads to correct responses Cognition = occurs when information is being organized, stored, processed, or communicated Concepts = ideas that represent a class or category of events or objects Prototypes = typical, highly representative examples of a concept Prejudice = negative attitudes and treatment of others o Explicit : prejudices that people display publicly o Implicit : prejudices that people keep hidden from public view Discrimination = differential treatment of individuals o In-group = the group a person identifies with o Out-group = groups that are treated with prejudice Fundamental distribution error = attributing other’s behavior to dispositional causes and underestimates the importance of a situation Social psychology = study of thoughts, feelings, and behavior influenced by the real or implied presence of others o Compliance – Soloman Asch
