The Business Research Process The Business Research Process Making a decision in our everyday lives is something that does not require a long thought out process. However, when making a decision for a company there are many factors to consider. For many companies, they use the research process to help identify and solve the problem. The business research process can be broken down into different steps. They are: Identifying and defining your problem, developing your approach, research design, collecting the data, reforming data analysis, and reporting and presentation. This paper will give brief examples of each step as well as a flow chart of the scientific method that can be applied to the business decision making process. The first step is identifying and defining the problem; once the problem has been defined you can move on to the approach. In this passage the problem that is being identified is a shortage in the budget and cuts to the personnel The organization that was chosen for this assignment was the Fulton County School board. This school system was chosen because over the last year it has gone through extensive changes which required, through research makes certain decisions. One of the major decisions that the company made was the decision to cut personnel. In July of last year Governor Perdue decided to cut a percentage of state funding from local schools. This left many school systems in a financial bind in search of ways to elevate their budget deficit. According to Superintendent Loe 85% of the school budget is personnel, it was obvious that layoffs were in the near future. The school board also had to make decisions on what programs if any would be cut first. The county had to recognize what problems needed to be dealt with in order to come up with a solution. The Business Research Process paraprofessionals could be cut the next step was to take action and terminate the programs. Since the funding was cut for the programs the budget was increased by 5%. The board felt this decision was in the best interest of Fulton County. When the board convened for the second session they began to design a research process that allowed the board to collect data and analyze their findings. A research report was submitted to the board for evaluation and the final determination was that further cuts were necessary. The next session was to review the budget and see if any more cuts could be found. After reviewing the budget it became apparent that personnel cuts could not be avoided. The next step was to devise a solution which would determine the exact positions that needed to be cut. After devising a solid solution Mr. Ron Wade (Director of Personnel) and Mr. Todd Morel (Chief Financial Officer) determined that 33 administrative positions must be cut to fit into the guidelines.
