Poverty In The United States Poverty in the United States America; home of the free and land of opportunity! That really depends on who you ask and at what stage of life they are at. Though many ethnic groups have been halted in the past by segregation, racism, prejudice and just plan old hatred and stupidity these groups have overcome many hardships yet poverty still exist on some levels in the US. But what is poverty? For most American, the word “poverty” suggests destitution (Johnson and Rector, 2004). Poverty exists because many Americans do not have enough money for food, shelter and clothing. Poverty exist because many Americans live beyond their means and they get swept away in the American dream of have’s and have not’s. In this society poverty does not always mean what we think.
