3/12/11 Relationship With God and Torah v There is a unique belief with the Jewish people of a covenant between them and God. Both parties are held accountable in this contract. The people are expected to obey God and God in return grants special favors and is bound by his own ethical agreements to the people. This covenant between God and Abraham is what created this special relationship. v Jews are known in religious terms as the people who have experienced a long and sometimes difficult history as a dialogue of God. v The Torah was established as the spiritual and secular foundation of the dispersed nation. The five books of Moses were accepted as a sacred covenant.

3/12/11 History of Key Sacred Texts v The first five books of Moses or the Pentateuch that appear at the beginning of the Tanakh which is the Hebrew Bible. Or as Christians would say, “The Old Testament”, are the most sacred part of the scriptures to Jewish people. They believe that these books were divinely given to Moses and written by him. v Certain stories in the Pentateuch are of great spiritual significance to the Jews such as The Creation, The Garden of Eden, The Great Flood, and The Tower of Babel.
