Historical Style Period: A period of time during which historians perceive certain unifying stylistic and aesthetic characteristics of a certain culture. Helpful generalizations Subjective; vary among sources Edges are very blurry Vary among the arts Vary geographically Cerebral vs. Emotional The Middle Ages----- Begin in roughly 476 with the fall of Rome A time of relative isolation, slow change Ascendancy of the Christian church Most preserved art and music is sacred The church was the center of knowledge Increase in the production of both sacred and secular art and music after year 1000 (Sacred: religious or spiritual in nature, Secular: worldly or NOT religious) Genre: A term describing a particular category of works; based on common characteristics (form style purpose musical forces)
