Describe the efforts of Senator Joseph McCarthy to investigate alleged Communist influence in the United States Vocabulary Terms and Definitions HUAC - House Un-American Activities Committee Hollywood Ten - Ten unfriendly witnesses that were called to testify but refused. Sent to prison, believed the hearings were unconstitutional Blacklist - named as unfit to hire/condemned for having a communist background Alger Hiss - former state department official, accused of spying for the soviet union. Ethel and Julius Rosenberg - minor activists in the american communist party, sentenced to death (first us citizens executed for espionage) Joseph McCarthy - anti-communist activist, senator, republican from wisconsin, made a lot of unsupported accusations (McCarthyism) McCarthyism - unsupported attacks on suspected communists in the early 1950’s Fill in the diagram below with the causes of the Fear of Communism in the boxes to the left and the effects in the boxes to the right. Fear of Communist Influence Many Americans felt threatened by the rise of Communist governments in Europe and Asia. Some even felt that Communists could threaten the U.S. government from within. These fears increased when people found out about some spies selling U.S. government secrets to the Soviets. Republicans accused the Truman administration of being “soft on communism.” In response to this pressure, Truman set up a Loyalty Review Board. The Board investigated over 3 million people.
