Study Guide Chapter 1: Sociological Imagination, sociological theories, and social   research SPRING 2011 1. What is sociology? scientific study of human social behavior. Sociology is the systematic study of human society and social interactions. Characteristics of groups and societies (society—a human group that shares the same territory and culture) How society affects people How people affect society 2. What is SOCIOLOGICAL IMAGINATION? The ability to see individual behavior within the larger society Personal troubles (micro) and public issues (macro) Example: suicide Personal troubles : private problems that affect individuals and the networks of people with which they associate regularly Public or social issues : issues that affect large numbers of people and require solutions at the societal level Sociological perspectives : the ability to see the relationship between individual experiences and the larger society 3. What is a social fact? How do social facts relate to sociology according to Emile Durkheim? Social fact: patterned ways of acting, thinking, and feeling that exist outside any one individual but that exert control over the behavior, thinking and or feeling of each person. (Durkheim) Our thinking, acting, and feeling are patterned. It is not what we created but it is what society exerted social control over us individually. Emile Durkheim: First to apply scientific method to study of society. Sociologists must observe social facts to arrive at scientific conclusions.
