Conversation Energy Lab Purpose: Is the total mechanical energy (sum of GPE and KE, in this case) conserved when displacement and time of a rolling marble is kept constant, as well as the height during the rolling of the marble? Materials: Physics Stand Rollercoaster Meter stick CPO timer II Photogate Battery Connection Wires Ball Procedure: 1. First, make sure that the Physics stand is level. To do this, make sure that all three feet on the physics stand is about the same distance from the wooden stand. 2. The rollercoaster should be put five holes, counting from the first hole below. Use the attached screw in the kit to secure the rollercoaster onto the physics stand. 3. Now, using the connection wires, connect the CPO timer II unit to the photogate. 4. Turn the switch of the CPO timer II (located at the sides) to “On.” 5. Now you are ready to begin the experiment.
