Lecture 7 2/7/11 Bastic Types of Energy Kinetic (motion) Radiative (light) Stored or potential Energy can change type but it cannot be destroyed Conservation of Energy Energy can be neither created nor destroyed. It can change form or be exchanged between objects. The total energy contenet of the Universe was determined in the Big Bang and remains the same today What have we learned? Where do object get their energy? Conservation of energy: energy cannot be created or destroyed but only transformed from one type to another. Energy comes in three basic types: kinetic, potential, radiative What is the structure of matter? Matter is made of atoms, which consist of a nucleus of protons and neutrons surrounded by a cloud of electrons What are the phases of matter? Adding heat to a substance changes its phase by breaking chemical bonds As temperature rises, a substance from a solid to a liquid to a gas, then the molecules can dissociate into atoms What is light?
