A Glossary of Norse Mythological Figures Ask and Embla -the first man and woman, created by Odin, Vili and Ve from trees, probably the ash and the elm. Audhumla - the first cow. She arose from the thawed frost, and gave forth 4 streams of milk for the giant Ymir to drink. She licked the salty ice until a male figure appeared, named Buri. His descendants would take care of creation. Balder - the perfect god, completely good, son of Frigga and Odin. He was killed through the schemes of Loki. His mother had extracted promises from all of creation that they would not harm Balder. She failed to ask a little mistletoe tree and Loki learned of this. He had a dart made out of the mistletoe, and guided the blind Hoder, Balder’s brother, to throw the dart through the heart of Balder. Balder then went to the kingdom of Hel. In spite of the efforts of his brother Hermod, he was never allowed to return. Bor -son of Buri, married to Bestla. They gave birth to the three creator gods, Odin, Vili and Ve. Buri
