Unformatted text preview: Running head: AMAZON VS BARNES & NOBLE 1 Amazon vs. Barnes & Noble University of Phoenix Business Information Systems/219 BIS/219 February 23, 2010 AMAZON VS BARNES & NOBLE2 Executive Summary Barnes & Noble and Amazon are two key players in the book retail industry. Each company has an individual strategic competitive edge and has great influence in the internet industry. Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com has both proven to be in competition as online retailers. In order to stay competitive in the market both Barnes & Noble and Amazon have developed their own strategy with the appearance of their websites efficiency, data, visual presentation, and navigation. Although a person can log onto the internet and look for a book on either website, Amazon has increased its product availability to more than just books. Barnes & Noble may only be a retailer for books, audio, and video products but their brick and mortar positioning can provide customers, and the industry of the two companies at hand, a larger spectrum and wider variety for customers to choose from. Which one of the companies has lived up to their original core competency and which has moved away? Core competencies are not necessarily competitive advantages. Core competencies should be a difficult task to achieve, both Barnes & Noble and Amazon have company ideas or values that will enable their success and help their business grow in time. Amazon has clearly shown that they have engaged in their vision and have allowed the business to flourish with offering their customers almost anything on their website. On the other hand, Barnes & Noble has remained true to their vision and that is to be the affordable choice in regards to price, but does Barnes & Noble strategy have the competitive advantage over Amazon and their overall vision for what customers want now and in the future. From an analytical standpoint which company will show they have what it takes to be the benchmark or flagship in the online retailer business?
