Test 1 will cover specific sections out of Parts I, II and III of the textbook "The Essential Cosmic Perspective" by Jeffrey Bennett, Megan Donahue, Nicholas Schneider and Mark Voit or chapters 1-10 of the online textbook "Astronomy Notes" by Nick Strobel (see the link from the Links page of this website) However we are actually being quite selective in which topics we cover out of these chapters, so the following is a guide to the material you are expected to know for the first test, which will take place on Tuesday, February 15. Topic 1 - the Scale of the Universe section 1.2 of Essential and chapter 1 of Notes Topic 2 - The Night Sky You are expected to know how the stars and planets appear to move in the night sky, especially the motions of the stars, the Sun and the reason for our seasons here on Earth. We have not covered the motion of the Moon and the tides (section 2.3 of Essential) and this will not be on the test. chapter 2 of Essential and chapter 3 of Notes
