Six steps to Hypothesis testing: (does not work for confidence intervals) 1. Research problem – stated in reference to the alternative hypothesis in common discourse language 2. Statistical hypothesis (see below) 3. decision rule - written out and draw a picture 4. calculations – either by hand or on Excel 5. decision – reject the null or retain the null 6. interpretation - – stated in reference to the alternative hypothesis in common discourse language Statistical Hypothesis: Simple Regression: (p 576) H 0: β 1 = 0 H 1: β 1 ≠ 0 Multiple Regression: (p619) H 0: β 1 = β 2 = β3 = 0 H 1: At least one   ≠ 0 β Z –Scores – one population mean: (p337) H 0: µ 1 = 200 (or whatever the pop mean is) H 1: µ 1≠ 200 ((or whatever the pop mean is) – 2 tailed)) Or H 1: µ 1 > 200 ((or whatever the pop mean is) – 1 tailed Mean greater than the pop) Or H 1: µ 1 < 200 ((or whatever the pop mean is) – 1 tailed Mean less than the
