Compact End states of Stars A star can end up as: o A white dwarf (if initial mass of star is < 8 Msun) o A Neutron star (if initial mass of star 20<M<8 Msun) Chunk of core produced after core fuses everything into iron and then breaks down into individual neutrons o Black Hole (if initial mass >20 Msun) Very little understanding of what happens at center of black hole These are the final end products of stellar evolution o Which can also produce planetary nebulae or supernova remnants and lots of important chemical elements) Compact object White dwarf Same size as earth, same mass as sun Higher mass white dwarfs are smaller Comes into effect after planetary nebula/after star sheds outer envelope Dead core of low/intermediate mass stars (below 8 solar masses) Supported by electron degeneracy pressure against gravity EDP independent of temperature, so doesn’t change as the WD cools WD radiates light/heat into space, cooling as it loses energy
