Africans in Diaspora (North America) SC and GA Distinction between slavery in middle colonies and south Difference in settlement patterns o Also in evolution of slavery o Environment Settlers normally came from Caribbean o Most SC came from Barbados Initially raise livestock and fell timber later rice production Rice production changed the landscape of GA and SC – larger scale than MD and VA Environment – conductive to Africans but not Europeans Greater dependence on Africans and African know how in the low country colonies SC o First settlers – 1660s o 1663 – settlers offered twenty acres for every black male slave, ten acres for every female slave brought to colony o after 1670s – increased population – slave owners from Barbados – slavery well entrenched o blacks present in SC from founding o power over slaves no matter what black’s religion is o ¼ to 1/3 of slaves coming to SC slaves o imports more slaves than any other country in US
