Why does our behavior predict attitudes Self-justification (very important to know) o Cognitive dissonance, attitude change o Cognitive dissonance Tension- dissonance when beliefs (cognitions) or behaviors are inconsistent- when say or do something we have mixed feelings about Motivated to reduce discomfort Easiest to adjust thinking Hard to change what you do, or how it affects you, easy to change how you think about it Ex: extra credit; internship Festinger & Carlsmith (1957) N= 71 male undergraduates Measures of performance Boring task involving spools Tell next participant the task is fun IV= $1, 20, control $20=low dissonance, $1=high dissonance (insufficient justification lying for a dollar) Cognitive elements can be relevant to one another Cognitive dissonance theory We dislike cognitive inconsistency Inconsistent cognitions cause negative arousal Look up rest of slide Justify by changing cognitive elements to reduce
