Review Conformity- change in behavior or belief as the result of real or imagined group pressure Compliance- conformity that involves publicly acting in accord with an implied or explicit request while privately disagreeing Obedience- acting in accord with a direct order or command Conformity good and bad depending on behavior and social background/culture We choose labels to suit our values and judgments Classic conformity and obedience studies Construct miniature social world to study conformity in lab Sherif’s Norm Formation o Autokinetic phenomenon- self-motion; the apparent movement of light in the dark o Person sit in the dark, asked how much light moved When by self, averaged 8 inches When in room with others saying 1-2 inches: Would originally not change estimate Change gradually over the span of a few days until matches with others Our views of reality are not ours alone Social contagions o “mood linkage” around happy people, feel happier
