Change in behavior or belief as the result of real or imagined group pressure o Three types of conformity Compliance- publically complying, without direct orders, privately disagree Obedience- direct order, obey Acceptance- privately you change til you agree with message being delivered, act in accord with social pressure Uncertainty o In ambiguous situations, people tend to rely on information provided by others Sherif asked students to judge the apparent movement of a stationary light on a wall o Autokinetic Effect A stationary spot of light in a dark room appears to move Day 1 Participant stares at a pinpoint of light about 15 feet away Light seems to be moving but not sure o How far did it move? o “About 8 inches” Day 2 Joined by confederates Confederates all say small numbers o Participant changes to “6
