Matrix and Preservation Terms to know: Archaeological Record o Is the general name denoting the more or less continuous distribution of artifacts over the earth’s surface, in highly variable densities o Scattered over the entire world o Steven Wright Within record can break things down o Archaeological Data consists of any materials remains of human activity- a scatter of broken bones, a ruined house, a gold mask… anything your going to dig up, part of record o Within record and part of data: Sites: Site formation process: What happens after a site is deserted? How are things preserved? Affects what you FIND What happened to site after its been abandoned? Site formation process: those agencies, natural or cultural, that have transformed the archaeological record since a site was abandoned o Later humans can come back and reoccupy it, or completely taken it away, dig it up, loot it o Earthquakes, tsunamis, volcanoes, all affect site Two basic forms:
