Nicole Barbour 3/17/10 Capital Punishment The idea of capital punishment has been a concept that has inspired much debate amongst people. The opinions of whether it should be put into action have much to do with the beliefs in which people choose to live their lives by. The abolition of capital punishment in the European Union might be acknowledged to some, including those that believe in the theory of utilitarianism, as not in the best interest for the majority of the people. To enforce capital punishment means that the penalty for one’s offence would be death. Although this might be seen to some as an extreme form of punishment, to others it might be looked upon as the best solution to the problem. The theory of utilitarianism is a system of ethics that asserts that what is right and wrong is dependent upon and should be judged by the consequences of the actions being taken. A goal of utilitarianism is to create the greatest amount of happiness for the largest number of people and to produce the best possible result.
