UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS FACULTY OF ENGINEERING España, Manila HIGH CAPACITY CABLES & CONDUCTORS INTRODUCTION TO HICH CAPACITY CABLES High Capacity Cables or also called High Temperature Cables are types of cables that instead of using larger sizes of conductors to let higher current pass through, It has a different type of material used to be able to handle High temperatures at high current transmission conditions. The use of these cables would entail that installation is easier since man power used would be less than when cables are bigger. There are two types of High capacity cables depending on insulation which are bare or insulated. BARE CONDUCTORS The following conductors are some examples of High temperature bare conductors ACSS-Aluminum Conductor Steel Supported - Used since the early 1970’s, this conductor was designed to be an enhanced version of the ACSR.Compared to ACSR , ACSS has increased ampacity, reduced sags and can operate at higher temperatures. Its construction is composed of a coated steel wire core with surrounding layers of fully annealed, 1350-O aluminum round wires. The coatings in the core are either galvanized zinc, aluminum-coated, aluminum clad and Zinc-5% Mischmetal Alloy.
