UNIVERSITY OF SANTO TOMAS FACULTY OF ENGINEERING España, Manila HIGH CAPACITY CABLES & CONDUCTORS BASICS OF SUBMARINE CABLES Submarine cables or also called as Subsea cables, are special cables that are laid in sea beds that were designed to handle natural disturbances such as volcanic activity , tsunamis or roaming marine life. Submarine cables may be in the form of AC Cables or DC Cables. Technically , AC submarine cables are only used when the route length is less than 80 km, However DC cables do not have any limit as to route length and can be used depending on customer preference. The reason of the cable length limit of AC type submarine cables is due to the insulation costs it may incur Since AC cables require thicker insulation compared to DC cables. CHARACTERISTICS OF SUBMARINE CABLES Since Submarine cables are cables that will face possible disturbances coming from nature and human interaction such as trawls that are used by fishermen. Due to this , It is needed to examine a submarine cables’ characteristics Some parameters are the following.
