Erica Free Mr. Harris GEOL 1122K T/R 11-12:15 17 March 2009 Extra Credit VENUS EXPRESS: ATMOSPHERIC LOSS AND ELECTRODYNAMICS The Venus Express is a satellite that was put into orbit around Venus to detect electromagnetic behavior in its’ atmosphere. This satellite was helpful to discover that during the daytime, the sun generates a solar wind that deflects the loss of the atmosphere. On the night side of the planet, the lack of any solar winds leaves the atmosphere vulnerable to plasma loss. The exchange of energy from daylight to nighttime with the solar winds also lets the atmosphere lose a significant amount of ions per second. Deeper within the atmosphere of Venus is clouds with electronically charged sulfuric acid that when attracted across the clouds produces lightening.
