5. How would you describe Albania according to Hofstede?
Hofstede’s research on national culture includes individualism versus
collectivism, low versus high power distance, low versus high uncertainty avoidance,
masculinity versus femininity, and long versus short term orientation.
The first concept,
individualism versus collectivism, refers to how people function whether it be as an
individual or with a group.
Albania used to be a communist country and strongly
practiced collectivism, but they are working their way towards being an individualist
country like many well-developed countries already are.
The next concept is low versus high power distance.
This concept is similar to the
first concept in that Albania is in transition from being high on the scale of power
distance, meaning there is a huge gap between the weak and powerful, and being low on
the scale where people are more equal.
Some examples of countries that are considered
high and low in power distance are Guatemala and Sweden respectively.
