Bennett/TR: 11:00-12:15pm Response Paper #2 10/19/2010 Beyond Just War and Pacifism In the opening sentence of Beyond Just War and Pacifism , Walter Wink declares “For over four centuries, the peace churches have kept alive the Gospel’s witness against war” (Wink, 146). Furthermore, he points out the churches’ hypocrisy as he uses statistical data, such as, “… roughly 140 million people have been killed in war, most of them in this century” and “two- thirds of these casualties were in “Christian” Europe” (Wink, 146). After that, using effective solutions, such as the success of nonviolence in one Communist nation after another, Wink illustrates how nonviolence successfully works. Next, Wink alludes to biblical references, as he emphasizes the text in the prominent biblical passage in Matthew 5:38-41, where Jesus commands his followers not to resist evil, but to turn the other cheek, give the second garment, or walk the second mile.
