Fidati 1 Hannah Fidati Ms. Jennifer Basye English 1102 8 September 2010 A Test of Free Speech “Thank God for Dead Soldiers,” this is just one of the many messages endorsed by the famous Westboro Baptist Church, a local church in Kansas, that has shaken the media with their hateful protests and rallies against the American people and government. The Westboro Baptist Church made headline history for several years. Their provocative and controversial protest picketing has thousands of Americans in a rampage over their recent protests at military funerals. Their demoralizing and controversial protests started after the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” policy came into effect in the United States militia back in 1993. The Westboro Baptist church declares that the wrath of God fell upon the United States, and that all its citizens are damned to hell due to the sinful and lustful nature of our culture. They endorse this message by going to funeral processions for fallen soldiers with signs saying, “God hates the USA,” “God is your enemy,” “God hates FAGS,” and “God hates your tears.” The question confronted by the Supreme Court is whether this is an act motivated by freedom of speech or an intentional performance of
