History Notes (Week 7) Reconstruction - Emancipation January 1863 – Emancipation Proclamation by Lincoln- Convinced slaves to have effort for North to win the war. Enlists former slaves into the Union Army W.E.B DuBois – “To win the war, Lincoln freed the slaves and armed them.” o Black Units – Mass. 54 th (Segregated Unit with White Officers) o 10% of Union Army is Black Men o African Americans- “Gained nothing, but Freedom.” Redistribution of land (40 acres and a mule) “Sherman’s Special Field Order #15” Gives slaves divided land in the south and potential to keep it. Freedman’s Bureau – Land being redistributed to freed slaves. (40,000 get property) Political Reconstruction – (Lincoln) “ Restoration Pres. Andrew Johnson takes over after Lincoln’s assassination o 13 th -14 th (Blacks are Citizens and have Rights) Amendments o Slaveholders worth $20,000 before war lost citizenship. (13,000 Pardons) o (frees crooks)
