History Notes (Week 8) Last Indian Wars – Conquest of West. Sioux – Lakoda (1862) Minnesota: Colorado – Cheyenne and Arapahoe 1864- Cheyenne and Arapahoe gather at Sand Creek by Col. J M Chivington. o Chivington surrounds and kills the Indians. 1867- Medicine creek lodge [Comanche and Keowa] ( Discuss creating Indian reservations in Oklahoma ) 1874-75 Red River War (Gen. Sheridan) 1876 – Little Big Horn (aka Custer’s last stand) o Chief Sitting Bull leads Sioux Indians to victory o Indians go to Canada to escape from American’s revenge Chief Joseph of the Nez Perce (1873 – Idaho land grant is signed.) o Gen. O. O. Howard sent to negotiate with Nez Perce about land 1887- Dawes Severalty Act – Indians get citizenship and 160 acres of land.

o (1924- all Indians get the Dawes Act) 1890- Wounded Knee (South Dakota) scuffle breaks out killing 25 soldiers and more Indians. Almost 400 Indians mowed down on river bank. “Ghost Dance” unity among tribes.
