Unformatted text preview: Nguyen 1 Mi Thuy Nguyen BIOL 1120K TR/12:00 February 3, 2011 Writing Assignment 1 Sandra is a 62 year-old woman that was admitted into the hospital because her heart started racing intensely, and she could not stop it by relaxing like she normally could. In the past, her heart would often race and interrupt her sleeping patterns. The symptoms revealed shortness of breath, racing heartbeat, and profuse perspiration. At the time that she was admitted into the hospital, her heart was intensely racing, and she was extremely dizzy. Her blood pressure was 152/95 mm Hg and 125 beats per minute, indication that she could be suffering from a heart attack, but after examining her ECG (electrocardiography) results, the doctors concluded that she was suffering from atrial fibrillation. Atrial fibrillation occurs when the upper chambers (atria) of the heart fibrillate or "flutter," meaning the heartbeat is unusually fast (Seely 696).
