Lanre Keyede Ms. Laurah Norton English 1102 February 21, 2011 Guidos and Guidettes: the attack on Italian Americans The guido and guidette subculture has been widely popularized by the media in the last two years. The media portrays them as: womanizing, egotistical, hot-headed, and superficial among other things. These stereotypes are being put on the people of the Italian American community. For some, these shows are the only knowledge people have of Italian American and citizens of the upper eastern part of the U.S. Because of its exposure through the media, this subculture’s flamboyant and outrageous behavior is now being associated with the cultures of Italian Americans. This association is skewing the perception of Italian Americans and is causing the rest of the world to only view them as a part of the guido culture. Historically, Italian Americans have been unrepresented in the media. This new exposure of the guido culture is hindering most U.S. citizens from knowing about the civilized and more positive side of Italian Americans. Its likely that many U.S. citizens do not know much about the Italian American
