1- The Wingfield apartment is the setting of the play “The Glass Menagerie” by T. Williams. It is an apartment “one of those vast hive-like conglomerations of cellular living-units that flower as warty growths in overcrowded urban centers of lower middle-class population”, as reported by the author, in a description which makes the reader realize that they were a poor family who lived in such a sad atmosphere. The apartment is situated in the ghetto of St. Louis and, and the different room are separated by curtains, representing how “distant” the characters are one of each other. The author also describes the fire-escape in the set, an object which represents the “landing of it and steps descending from it” the characters use to get into and out of the apartment. 2- The idea expressed in this play is that of image against reality, and Amanda is the character that has a picture of the world and of gentlemen callers but which isn’t a reality in the place that she lives.
