[ THE ALCHEMIST ]

The Alchemist begins with the life of a young shepherd who has left his parents to become a farm boy. This boy has a very independent personality because of that fact he has left his parents home and his study to become a priest. The young shepherd meets a gypsy on his journey. This unnamed boy tells the gypsy about the reoccurring dream he is having about a young girl playing with his sheep and transporting him to the Egyptian Pyramids. The gypsy tells him to go to Egypt and find the treasure. I believe this scene is very important because this book’s main plot is about this boy going to find treasure in Egypt and the gypsy woman is leading him in the right direction. Another important scene is when the boy meets the old man while reading a book on a public bench. The mysterious man says, “And I’ll tell you how to find the hidden treasure.”(Coelho, pg 20). This man also helps the shepherd in the right direction. This man is very important because he knows the name of the farm boy’s father and mother hinting that this old man will help the young boy find this lost treasure. This is also one of the important conflicts in this section. This man says,”I am the king of Salem!” which triggers that this man is either crazy or someone who can really help the young boy (Coelho, pg 19). The main cause for this conflict is that the old man asks a lot about this book that the boy is reading and keeps trying to start a conversation. This annoys the boy which makes him try to settle by giving him the book. This resolution of the problem starts a conversation which leads to these two characters learning more about each other. The young shepherd is still talking to the self-proclaimed “King of Salem” and the mood of this book is getting tense. This incident causes the old man to tell this young boy, “But let’s say that the most important is that you have succeeded in discovering your Personal Legend.”(Coelho, pg 21) This event causes this young boy to think about what he has to do. The next day he comes and gives one-tenth of his flock to this old man for his services. This really changed the boy’s life in my mind. I think that this changed his life because he has given up everything once again, and is now going to Egypt to explore and find this hidden treasure. I think that because this character is young he still has the opportunity to change his life and have second chances. After arriving in the African seaport of Tangier, the young boy stops in a bar to have a drink. In
