Reading Response for story “Once more to the Lake” By E.B White Mikhael Boedhi-Tjahjono E.B White tells in the essay “Once more to the Lake” about how his trip back to a childhood vacation spot not only took him to the lake, but also sent his imagination back in time when he was still as a “son”. As a boy, White and his family always go to the lake in Maine for the entire month of august. They were enjoying the simple life along the shore while leaving all the complexity of everyday life. They returned summer after summer because none of them ever thought there was any place in the world like that lake in Maine. During the vacation, his thoughts wondered about how time might change everything. He remembers when in clear early morning, when the lake was cool and motionless and how he would sneak out before everyone else awoke. Unformatted text preview: before. The sound of his boy sneaking out in the morning, just exactly the same as he had done before sent his imagination wandering. The creepy sensation kept sneaking up on him throughout the week. As the days went by more memories of the past flooded his mind. The sound of inboard motors, the three track road, all reminded him of those wonderful times that he had there as a boy. But watching his son get ready to swimming, and having no thoughts of going in himself, he soon came to realize the years were not the same. The “true” reality pulled his imagination out of the past and into the future. When I was a boy, my family took me to mountain every school holiday where we can had the fresh air going through our lung. It was enjoyable memory and would never be forgotten. However, maybe soon enough that I will do the same as what my father did, as I grow up and will have a child one day....
