Vacancies control diffusion and some aspects of materials Interstitial or substitutional atoms (added accidentally or on purpose) have a huge effect on almost every important property of materials. For example, they strengthen materials. Dislocations completely control the strength of metals, and influence the performance of microelectronic devices. Grain boundaries act as barriers to dislocation motion and electron mobility, affecting a variety of properties.
