Dualism Substance dualism Property dualism- physical thing Why Materialism? Problems of dualism: the mind-body interaction problem; mind is non-physical and it is something distinctive, but the body is physical thus you can have body movement Everything that exists is material- mountain, trees, chair, building, yourself, etc. Behaviorism The case of the average tax payer The case of UVA tour- must be more than just tourist sights Category mistake: when we fail to recognize an entity is a logical construction, we are committing a category mistake Dualism and category mistake Mind is not a substance “mind”- set of behaviors and dispositions to behavior/ a logical construction out of dispositions to behavior Concerned w/ the meaning of the mind Dispositional account Salt is soluble means that if it is put in water, then it will dissolve Analogy: x believe p means that if x is in a circumstance, then x is likely to behave in a certain way
