Unformatted text preview: Assignment 4 Lisa Marie Migliorisi AMS/CIN 230 3/3/2011 The movement of black women between rural and urban areas and between southern and northern cities generated a series of moral panics. One serious consequence was that the behavior of black female migrants was characterized as sexually degenerate and, therefore, socially dangerous (Carby 739). African American women were viewed as dangerous because of their exploitations. Kellor suggests that black women would rather sell their bodies through prostitution rather than work hard for money. She believes that they do this because of the lack of protection. She also proposes that "fears of a rampant and uncontrolled female sexuality; fears of miscegenation; and fears of the assertion of an independent black female desire have been unleashed through migration" (Carby 745-746). This was portrayed in Carl Van Vechtens Nigger Heaven and Claude McKays Home to Harlem. In Nigger Heaven the character, Lasca Sartoris, uses her sexuality to make her way through life. She enticed an older, rich man with her Sartoris, uses her sexuality to make her way through life....
