Spring 2011 Location: Library W 4550 Instructor: Madeline del Toro Cherney Office: SBS S541 Email: mcherney@notes.cc.sunysb.edu Phone: 631-632-7619 TA: Steven Kroll Email: Steven.Kroll@Stonybrook.edu Office hours: Wednesdays: 4.00pm – 5.00pm Meet in SBS 5th floor lounge Course Description This course examines the cultures of North American native people considering their history, social dynamics, philosophy and spirituality. The course perspective is based on American Indian authorship. Week one thru six will focus on overall themes concerning underlying issues that contribute to the understanding of American Indian people favoring a Native American perspective. Week seven thru fourteen will focus on seven North American regional cultural areas. The weekly readings will concentrate on specific tribes from each cultural area; however the class lectures will also broaden the understanding of the cultural area being studied beyond the specific tribal group of the readings. Course Objectives To provide a comprehensive and diverse understanding of Native North Americans with respect to their ethnographic culture as well as the current social issues facing contemporary tribal people.
