Glycolysis Occurs in the cytoplasm Investment of 2 ATP in the beginning of the pathway Generate 4 ATP total Generate 2 NADH Net production of 2 ATP and 2 NADH 2 NADH and 2 pyruvate per glucose molecule Glucose- 6 carbons Energy investment phase- use 2 ATP to initiate the catabolism of glucose Energy payoff phase- 4 ATP produced = the net production of 2 ATP The production of the 2 pyruvates result in the production of 2 NADH molecules Remember- there is a constant pool of cofactor (NAD and NADH) Glycogen is a better starting material for glycolysis Energy investment phase- glycogen is a good starting molecule because only 1 ATP is needed to initiate the catabolism of glycogen Energy payoff phase- 4 ATP produced = the net production of 3 ATP per glucose monomer from glycogen Substrate level phosphorylation Transfer of high energy phosphate to generate ATP Kinases catalyzes these reactions Pyruvate Branch point
