PHYS 230 Exam 2 – Final Exam notes Special Relativity o What’s special? No acceleration o Event Something that has a time and place Distance btwn the 2 events D 2 = x 2 – Ct 2 But the number we get from the person outside and inside do not equal each other We played with time but not with space Space shrinks for things that are going fast o Shrink by a factor of gamma (7) o The boxcar gets smaller by 15% if you’re watching the box car move quickly o Once the box car is shrunk, the time you see the light travel will equal the same time it is for the person inside o The closer they travel at the speed of light, the smaller the box car will be o If a spaceship is traveling at 99% the speed of light to reach a start 25 light years away, the person inside would reach the star in about 3 years (25/gamma(7)) because the space btwn the spaceship and star shrinks o For the person outside watching, it would take them a little more than 25 light years to reach the star Cosmic rays o strike upper atmosphere of earth o create Muons Different type of electrons/particle (?) Formed from electrons Don’t last long (one-millionth of a second or 10 -6 ) Formed 10 km above the earth Some of them move towards the center of the earth at almost the speed
