Week 5 Study Worksheet 1. In the simplified general equation for photosynthesis: CO 2 + H 2 O C 6 H 12 O 6 + O 2 , where does the O 2 come from? The molecular oxygen comes from the water, as demonstrated by the Hill reactions. 2. What are the two major processes involved in photosynthesis? Which of the products (sugars or oxygen) is produced in each process? The two major processes involved in photosynthesis are the light reactions, and the Calvin cycle reactions. Oxygen is produced in the light reactions, and sugars are produced in the Calvin cycle reactions. 3. What happens when a molecule, like chlorophyll a or other pigment, absorbs light? The pigment is excited and transfers the light randomly through a network of pigment molecules that absorb light of increasingly longer wavelength until the energy reaches the reaction-center chlorophyll, which transfers an excited electron to a primary acceptor. 4.
