Time and Diurnal Motion: Diurnal Motion- apparent motion of objects across the sky due to motion of earth’s rotation Declination- latitude of earth projected on sky; measures in degrees, arc min, and arc sec; is + or - 90 from the celestial equator Right Ascension- longitude of the earth projected on the sky; measure in hours, minutes, and seconds; has 24 hours, with 1 hr=15 degrees Hour Angle- tells how long it has been since an object was at transit; subtract RA from local sidereal time, specify east or west Local Sidereal Time- the time it takes for the earth to rotate once on its axis, 23 hours and 56 minutes Solar time- 24 hours, includes 23 hours and 56 min it takes the earth to rotate once on it axis, as well as 4 min it takes for earth to travel around the Sun Circumpolar- a star from a given observers latitude that does not set below the horizon Polaris- declination +90 degrees, altitude 40 degrees, DOESN’T have an hour angle Coordinate Systems: Local Horizon- altitude and azimuth; systems that are dependent on an observer's location Equatorial- declination, RA, and HA; systems that project the earth’s coordinate systems on the sky making them independent of the observer Ecliptic- apparent path the Sun travels, zodiacs divide it in 12; passes through moon and jupiter
