Unformatted text preview: LECTURE 1 (1-12) • When referring to NC’s history, think of the “southern” or confederate states o A main characteristic of these 11 was slavery o South stereotyped- accent perceived as less educated, not accurate because there are different accents within NC • Characteristics of NC: o For most of NC’s existence it was rural and agricultural o NC has a unique topography/geography- Mountains, Piedmont, Beaches o NC has become a fast changing state-> the agriculture has turned to cities and towns (fairly recent, though) *Early NC didn’t develop as early as other states (Virginia, SC) because of its coastal geography o Prevented it from having deep water ports which were essential to maritime travelers *Edenton is the oldest colonial town in NC o Bath is the oldest town in NC • Disperging name: “Rip Van Winkle State” -> the state was “asleep” while the other states made progress o “good” names: 1.
