1 Experiment 1: Measurement and Density The objectives of the lab, Measurement and Density, were to have students get acquainted with using common laboratory equipment and volumetric glassware, take accurate measurements of aqueous solutions, and determine the densities of these various solutions. For Part 1, the hypothesis was: if the density of Coke and Diet Coke were to be determined, then the density of Diet Coke will be less than that of Coke. This was to be believed because Coke seemed less concentrated and condense than its diet counterpart. From the results of the experimental data, it is noted that the density of Coke is greater compared to Diet Coke, and the average density change is about .04 g/mL. This may seem trivial, but it is significant in reality when one looks at the different ingredients. The reason the hypothesis was correct as the density of the two soft drinks do vary. This is so because Coke contains a very high sugar content, which makes the overall solution denser. In contrast, Diet sodas are usually less dense due to the substitution of artificial sweeteners. This artificial sweetener is much sweeter than sugar, thus a less volume is needed in the soda. There was a difference displayed in the densities of the Coke and Diet Coke between the varieties of glassware. The averages of densities obtained from the corresponding glassware are as follows: volumetric pipette: (.9971); graduated cylinder: (.691); Burette: (1.1260).
