1 Moore Ryan Moore Dr. Moore ENG 113 (J) 18 September 2019 A Loss for Words Within the short story, Autumn at the Automat , Lawrence Block uses multiple themes and main ideas to convey a counteracting emotion from the main character. The story is set within an automat in New York, inferred by the common area restaurants: Delmonico’s and Longchamps. The author, Lawrence Block, wrote this literary piece to convey a sense of emotion towards less fortunate people. By not being judgmental towards others, the author’s purpose is fulfilled as the story translates to real life. Within, the main ideas of being slow to anger, ulterior motives, coping, and grievance are all present. By slowing to anger, the waiter could have avoided the situation involving the authorities. Knuddelmaus, Alfred’s pet name for the main character, coped with loss differently from most, as she relied on trickery. She also displays her ulterior motives throughout as her dynamic character evolves. Without a doubt, the story shows the capabilities of any one person, proving that certain people will do anything possible to fulfill their wants. Because of this, Block’s purpose and main ideas are constantly reiterated throughout the piece itself. Due to the setup of the story, several themes and literary devices are present to support the author’s purpose and historical context. There are multiple themes creating a sense of deception and trickery among the characters. The present themes are that looks can be deceiving, crime does pay, and the magician slide of hand.
